Peter began gardening when he was a child living near Frensham. He helped run his school gardening club and was encouraged to seek a career in horticulture when the school visited RHS Wisley. He completed the two year course at Wisley, the National Certificate in Horticulture at Cannington College, an Advanced National Certificate in Horticulture at Askham Bryan College and then spent three years at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, obtaining their diploma.
After a year working in the Jerusalem Botanic Garden he began his career as a professional head gardener and worked in:
