Haslemere Musical Society (HMS): Orchestral & Choral Concert

Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana is a much-loved choral piece and the Haslemere Musical Society will be performing it with three excellent soloists: Susan Young (soprano), John Pierce (tenor) and Keel Watson (baritone). In addition there will be a choir of students from Woolmer Hill and Rodborough schools. The orchestra will be enhanced by various instruments not usually heard in the society’s concerts. The Shostakovich Violin Concerto also requires exciting orchestration as well as brilliant violin playing. Fenella Humphreys is the soloist well able to embrace this challenge. Tickets through members, through the Haslemere Hall Box Office 01428-642 161 or online www.haslemerehall.co.uk. Further information from www.hmsoc.org.uk.

Grayshott Folk Club presents: Jez Lowe & The Bad Pennies

Acoustic simplicity coupled with electric vitality. Jez Lowe is a long-established singer/songwriter from County Durham and one of the Folk world’s enduring icons. His songs are sometimes gritty, often humorous and give a voice to the people of the North-East and the way of life many of them lead. He has travelled tens of thousands of miles and played thousands of live gigs around the whole of the British Isles and a long way beyond. Not only is he one of the busiest live performers in the country, his songs are among the most widely sung by other performers, whether by long-established acts like Fairport Convention, The Dubliners and Bob Fox, or by the new breed of stars like The Unthanks, The Young 'Uns and The Duhks. The Bad Pennies are also brilliant musicians in their own right and comprise: Kate Bramley - fiddle, Andy May - Northumbrian smallpipes, whistles + multi-instrumentalist and David de la Haye - bass. Support: Martha- is a talented young musician from Fleet. A few months ago, I saw her perform a short set at Hemingway’s Café in Haslemere High Street and she really impressed me with her beautiful, powerful singing voice and guitar playing..
