U3A Meeting: Joe Lyons by Neville Lyons

Neville is a historian and archivist for the family business started by his relative Joe Lyons, who founded and ran the cafes and corner houses which were a feature of English life for most of the 20th century. With many archive photos and anecdotes, Neville will explore the social history of this famous institution which stretches from 1887 to 1998, affording a trip down memory lane with recollections of the tea shops, corner houses, hotels and of course the ' Nippy ‘ waitresses. A remarkable entrepreneur, though with no experience of the catering business, Joe Lyons built the world’s first food empire, fed 15,000 guests at royal garden parties, managed a big wartime ordnance project and developed in-house the first business computer.
