The Rustic Renaissance: Haslemere’s Arts and Crafts Heritage

Don’t miss this exhibition which tells the intriguing story of Haslemere in the early 1900s became a thriving centre for a community of artists and craftspeople, inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement – one of the most influential international artistic movements of modern times. Determined to revive lost country crafts, they set up craft workshops and weaving houses in the town and collected folk art objects from all over Europe and brought them back to Haslemere to inspire local artisans. The exhibition showcases wonderful objects from the Museum’s remarkable European Peasant Arts Collection as well as rarely seen textile designs made by local weavers. Also on display will be original artwork by Godfrey Blount one of the founders of the Peasant Arts Movement as well as photographs and documents from the Peasant Arts archive. enquiries@haslemeremuseum.co.uk, www.haslemeremuseum.co.uk, 01428-642 112.

U3A Meeting: The Atlantic Railway, Brunel's Vision, with Ian Kennedy

The first hundred years or so of steam passenger ships across the North Atlantic and pursuit of that elusive Blue Riband. 'Buy your ticket at Paddington Station and disembark in Boston or New York', was Brunel's plan. Even he would have been impressed by the century that followed of largely British triumph in finance, design, engineering, and artistic (including gastronomic!) skills which produced the magnificent procession of ever grander and majestic ocean liners. Courage, folly and massive investment. Can ships disappear, totally, into the North Atlantic without trace? Certainly and disturbingly frequently!
