These are comments put forward by members of the public at the formal Launch of the Healthcheck held on 15^th January 2003. The “dots” figure indicate that the suggestion was agreed with by that number of people.

Haslemere Hall, with its stage and pit, should be used more for high quality theatre and musical events of a semi‑professional or professional standard – it is also valuable as a cinema – but the same improvements would apply	No newsagent open on Sundays till 10.00 a.m.
A helpful ‘Welcome Pack’ to newcomers to Haslemere given by Museum 2 dots	Better information sent to village shops about what is happening in Haslemere – perhaps bi‑monthly leaflets 3 dots

Woolmer Hill School is a successful school with good facilities. Why aren’t there more evening classes/community events held there?	There is no definition of “affordable” – could the town work out one for this area?

As the Haslemere Health Centre is to enable the survival and success of “market towns” and to ensure that local communities have a “proper input” into Council decisions, how much change can we expect to see as a result of Waverley’s policy of allowing infill development in gardens, potentially on an unprecedented scale? This will, if it is not strenuously resisted, affect adversely: · residential amenity; · traffic congestion; and · parking and local services – all part of the Health Check’s remit	More mini‑buses for elderly and disabled

Things I Like	Things That Need Improving
St Christopher’s Church is a heritage feature which should not be demolished. It is important as a Church – but as a Concert Hall it is very beautiful. Its position on the far side of green is lovely 2 dots	Formal input from Chichester District Council and West Sussex Parish Councils essential
The Museum provides: · excellent educational facilities; · stimulating galleries; · a much used lecture hall; · a 7,000 volume national history library; · a social centre for many local societies and clubs; · a cultural exhibition centre for e.g. painting, sculpture; · a Visitor Information Centre IT MUST BE SUPPORTED 2 dots	More social facilities for young people: · proper cinema? · clubs? At present, Haslemere only caters for older wealthy people 5 dots Parks/adventure playgrounds for older children 9-15 year olds
Haslemere deserves a good library in a high quality purpose‑built building – Weyhill site is fine 1 dot	Better television reception

	Why is Surrey County Council planning to get rid of youth’s only sizeable meeting space?
	The skate park on The Heron’s car park is FAR TOO SMALL and thus dominated by teenagers when younger children would enjoy scooting, skating and cycling as well 1 dot
	Haslemere is expanding fast – new flats etc – but the infrastructure remains the same (Schools, Health Centre, Hospital, trains etc)
	Haslemere Hall needs a major refurbishment or a new hall on the same site 1 dot
	More low cost housing 5 dots
	Empty shabby shops 1 dot

SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY

Haslemere Museum This is a most useful, cultural, educational and community centre. It badly needs financial support. Recent developments have seriously reduced its reserves 1 dot

Library Ensure it is on a good site 2 dots Computer facilities should not take away from similar facilities planned at Woolmer Hill with new technology status

	Haslemere should have central all‑weather floodlit soccer pitches and covered tennis courts as would any small town in France. Also more provision for skate‑boarders. Keep young people occupied to keep them out of trouble 3 dots
	Make more of Haslemere’s past ........... the hilltop writers, e.g. Tennyson, as a tourist attraction
	A bigger and better hall for entertainments – arts, functions etc 3 dots
	Youth clubs and transport to local villages integrated 6 dots
	Try and find right formula for youth activities; do not concentrate too much on elderly – the young are the future 6 dots
