Haslemere Town Mayor and Mayoress, Brian and Diana Howard were received by Mayor Floyd Adams Jnr. in Savannah, Georgia, on Monday 9th August when Mayor Adams presented our Mayor with the Key to the City of Savannah, Georgia, USA
Savannah, founded by Haslemere Member of Parliament, General James Oglethorpe in 1733, is the first City of the State of Savannah which General Oglethorpe named after King George the Second.
Whilst in the USA on a private visit the Mayor & Mayoress of Haslemere, Brian & Diana Howard stopped off en route home in the State of Georgia to explore the 266 year link between Haslemere and the historic city of Savannah.
Savannah's most famous son and founder, General James Edward Oglethorpe was none other than the Member of Parliament for Haslemere from the 1720's through to 1750's and a plaque on the front of Haslemere Town Hall commemorates this.
The Georgia Historical Society through their President, Lisa White and Director of Education, Octavia Starbuck, were particularly helpful in arranging the visit which included a meeting between our Mayor and the Mayor of Savannah, Floyd Adams Jr.
