The Beech Avenue at Marley
This avenue, know locally as ‘Cathedral Walk’, is on land acquired by the National Trust in 1927. However the beech, which were planted in the 1960’s failed to flourish,
largely because the woodland strip belonging to Marley Copse was obliterating much of the light. Ben Pite, owner of Marley Copse, was anxious to give this land to the National Trust, and after his death his sister, Jill, gave it in his memory in 2008. Local Marley Common residents raised £4,000 towards restoration work and the Blackdown and Hindhead Supporters have supplemented this with a further £1,000.
Pine and holly have been felled and 22 young beech trees planted. The improvement is startling.
