Hidden Hindhead – the Hunting Lodge
The site at Hurt Hill, Hindhead Common, known as the Temple of the Four Winds, was the location of a fine hunting lodge, built in 1910 by Viscount Pirrie. This part of the Witley Estate was acquired by the National Trust in 1955, by which time the lodge was in poor repair and had to be dismantled in 1966. Local volunteers have recently excavated the stone plinth and Black Down & Hindhead Supporters have agreed to fund the restoration of the base and the removal of scrub undergrowth in order to open up the view.
