Haslemere Elects New Mayor
At the annual town council on 18th May, a new Mayor was elected. Michael Dover, Mayor of Haslemere 2005-2006 opened the meeting and asked Jonathan Carter from Three Counties Church to lead the prayers.
Nominations for Mayor of Haslemere for 2006-2007 were then sought. Cllr Michael Foster proposed Cllr. Brian Howard and the proposal was seconded by Cllr. Jackie Keen. There being no other nominations, Cllr. Howard was duly elected as Mayor of Haslemere for the forthcoming year.
Cllr. Michael Biddiscombe then gave a vote of thanks to Cllr. Michael Dover, the outgoing Mayor. Cllr. Biddiscombe said that his year could be summed up in three words - Work, Work, Work! Cllr Dover had tirelessly worked in council meetings, at community events and had been a most innovative Mayor. As a army officer he brought not only his military skills, but also his warm humanity and good humour to the post.
Mrs. Melissa King (Brian Howard's daughter) then received the consort's badge from Cllr. Michael Dover before Brian Howard spoke about his forthcoming year and the honour of being elected Mayor for a second time. His chosen charities for the year are GUTS (Guildford Undetected Tumour Screening) and PAGEANT (Projects Aiding Gambian Education and Natural Talent).
The new Mayor then proposed Cllr. Barbara Jeffers as the Deputy Mayor of Haslemere and Cllr. Biddiscombe was pleased to second this proposal. Cllr. Jeffers said she honoured to accept and looked forward to working with the Mayor to the benefit of Haslemere.
The business of the meeting then continued and at the end, guests were invited to stay and celebrate in an appropriate manner!
