"One Hundred Years of Teaching for Learning

Welcome from the Headteacher

One of my greatest pleasures is to talk about life at Camelsdale First School.

I have the privilege of spending much of my time in and for the school. I know that it serves, and is served by, a community that values learning. Our school is focussed on teaching for learning and enjoys a reputation for high standards. I therefore readily introduce you to our school through the pages in this brochure.

We endeavour to show all aspects of school life in this booklet, but there are many examples of learning and achievements that are too numerous to mention. Adults share their skills with the children, the school grounds are a rich learning resource and the children share success in visits away, exhibitions and competitions.

Reference is made to many aspects of care and curriculum provisions in the following pages. It is, however, impossible to print the most important ingredients of atmosphere and ethos. We take great pride in managing a school that functions in a calm and happy environment. The best way to see this is on a visit to the school. I therefore extend an invitation to anyone who is interested in becoming part of the school community to come and see the school in action.

The Governors and I aim to maintain and develop the standard of excellence that has become known as Camelsdale. We offer a full range of opportunities to all who come here so that every child is able to make the most of life both now and in the future. Our OFSTED Inspection took place in January 2002 and resulted in a very good report of which we are very proud. The Inspectors acknowledged that Camelsdale is a "a good school with many strengths" and "has made good improvement since the last inspection in September 1997". Do read the quotes from OFSTED in this brochure or you can find a copy of the full report either in school or by visiting the OFSTED website.

Starting school for the very first time is an exciting experience for all children. It is a big step in their life and we hope to make them feel secure and happy so that they will be confident and eager to learn. In the term prior to their admission, children are invited to visit school on one afternoon session a week in preparation for their official entry to the school.

The school office is open between 8.45am and 4pm during term time. Appointments can be made outside of these times. You are welcome to contact us for enquiries or help at any time. We are a friendly and welcoming Community school. Do come and see for yourself!

The Camelsdale Way

The Camelsdale Way is like a river - a learning journey that grows. It is a journey of exploration with fun along the way, on which everyone follows their own path. There are many tributaries and everyone contributes to them. The journey is a connected one - a learning cycle that never ends. It dries up if it is not nurtured daily. Like the river, everyone on the journey eventually finds their own level. The journey can be tough at times - everyone has to work together through the rough parts - it certainly requires team work. From very small beginnings it develops, collecting fascinating things along the way. With continued nourishment it becomes fulfilled and meanders confidently into the ocean of life.
