Our School Aims

At Shottermill we aim to enable children to achieve their full potential through a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum appropriately delivered. The children are encouraged to develop a sense of personal responsibilty for their own moral and social behaviour with respect for the values and rights of others. Self-confidence and self-esteem are promoted to enable the children to develop as independent, thinking, well-motivated people, prepared to contribute to the local and wider community. We aim to provide a caring and appreciative environment for all who work in the school.
"Pupils' behaviour is good. Staff have high expectations of behaviour and successfully channel pupils' energy and enthusiasm for learning"

The Governing Body

Governors are drawn from the local community, parents and staff. The Governing Body of Shottermill Junior is dynamic and pro active and supports the school in maintaining its high standards.

Curriculum

The curriculum is broad based and designed to take account of the varying levels of ability of each child. We expect high standards in all areas of work.

Throughout the year the staff plan special weeks, events and days which emphasise that learning can be fun. These include Technology Week and Book Week. Special days are organised when children enjoy role-play to support the topics of Roman, Tudors and India.

In the past 12 months groups have visited: The Tate Modern, St Stephen's Church, Fishbourne, Witley Common, Hampton Court, Guildford, and Portsmouth.

In June 2000 a large group of Year 5 children spent five days at Brenscombe, an excellent activity centre near Corfe Castle in Dorset. They took part in a variety of activities including abseiling, archery, canoeing, rock climbing, power boating and walking. The residential trip is planned for future years.

Computers

We have a computer suite with 9 computers as well as computers based in year groups. Children are taught computer skills in half classes and may use the computers for work in all subjects.

French

French is taught by a specialist teacher to Year 5 and 6, with each child taking part in one class lesson and one group session per week. The aim is to stimulate interest in a foreign country, its people and its culture, and to impart enjoyment of the experience of discovering a new language. In the summer term, a large group of year 6 children regularly undertake a residential visit to France.

Music

We have two school choirs, recorder groups and a school orchestra. Individual or group music lessons are available from specialist teachers who visit the school. The choir and orchestra take part in concerts in the local community.

Homework

Homework reinforces and complements class work, providing the opportunities for individuals to develop research skills and encouraging independent learning. Each child will be supplied with a homework book. This will provide a link between home and school as we do depend on parental support and appropriate feedback.

Clubs

School clubs meet during the lunch break or after school. When clubs take place after school children are notified of the times so that parents can make arrangements for collecting them. The following lunchtime/after school activities normally take place: Gardening, chess, French, netball, football, athletics, tennis, cricket, computer club and recorders.
"The curriculum is enhanced by the range of clubs and extra-curricular activities"
OFSTED Nov 1997

Policies

The school has policies on all important issues such as behaviour, anti-bullying, equal opportunities and teaching and learning. Parents are welcome to come into school and speak to us about them.

Contact With Parents

A child's progess is enhanced by a good home-school relationship.

In the Autumn term parents are invited to the school to discuss their children's work and general progress. We find this first meeting particularly useful as we are able to establish parents' views on how their children are settling into their new classes. We have a follow-up meeting in the Spring term and an exhibition of children's work in the summer term. At the end of the Summer term parents receive a written report detailing the pupil's progress and achievement.

If at any time we are concerned about your child's educational progress we will contact you. In return, if you have any worries or difficulties concerning your child please contact your child's teacher or the headteacher. Our primary concern is the well-being and happiness of the children in our care.
"The school is successful in maintaining a productive and worthwhile partnership with parents"

Parent Help

We are very grateful for the tremendous parental help we receive in this school. We have parents involved in reading, computers, cooking, sewing, netball, athletics, the library and helping with art or science activities. If you are unable to come to the school there are numerous ways in which you may be able to help.

Shottermill Parents' Association

All parents are automatically members of the association. The Annual Meeting is held in September when a committee is elected. During the year a number of fund-raising and social events are organised. The substantial fund-raising events have enabled the school to purchase numerous multi media computers to equip the ICT suite.
