A £1,000 amateur sports club grant could be yours!
February 2011

Amateur sport plays a constructive, cohesive role in many urban and rural communities across the country. Sports writer Gareth A Davies – himself a keen amateur sportsman – reveals how The Daily Telegraph, in partnership with RBS, is aiming to promote and nurture sport at a local level through the launch of its Sport for You grant.
By Gareth A Davies 4:22PM GMT 25 Jan 2011 (Telegraph)

There are just under two million sports volunteers in the UK and an estimated 140,000 amateur sports clubs, whose activities underpin communities up and down the country. Those clubs play a vital role in society, creating a place for social interaction and an environment where different generations come together to be active and share the joy of sporting participation. Community and amateur sports clubs are often where most sports enthusiasts begin and end their playing days, from the village cricket club, to the lawn bowls club, to a badminton club in a local gymnasium. The Daily Telegraph, in partnership with RBS, will now help those communities by awarding five £1,000 support packages each month for the next year to encourage the development of amateur and community sports clubs across the country. In order to do so, we would like you to tell us about your club, your successes, those who have served above and beyond the call of duty, what your club has done or would like to do within your community, and how you would put your £1,000 grant to use.

I have covered grassroots sport for The Daily Telegraph for almost 20 years – as school sport and Paralympic sport correspondent – and the Telegraph Media Group has a rich heritage of supporting the seeds of sporting greatness in the UK. For example, for the past 12 years successive groups of amateur runners made up of staff and our readers – egged on by non-running team captains Des Lynam, Gabby Logan, Kirsty Gallacher, Ade Adepitan and Zara Phillips – have formed the Telegraph London Marathon team, and in that time have raised £1.37?million for the neurological charity The Brain and Spine Foundation. Many young people we have featured on our sports pages, or who have won schools awards, have gone on to represent their country at international competitions, while some have simply left school and continued to play amateur sport. The grassroots of sporting endeavour in the UK are replete with worthy causes and your outstanding achievements, tales of dedication and commitment to the cause are what we would like to hear about.

Whether it is a boxing club in an inner-city community in Leeds or Liverpool which needs to have a roof repaired, a netball team in rural Norfolk setting up a tournament, or a table tennis club in a portable building in London needing new surfaces to play on, we would like to know how your club started and how it serves your community. Some of the issues affecting amateur sports clubs revolve around facilities, for others it is about attracting members, but amateur and community sports clubs are all linked by one thing: all of those involved have never forgotten that sport plays an important role in every school, village, town and city.

This is a subject close to my heart. There are times when I often feel that my commitment as a journalist came about through being a sportsman, both at school and for my local clubs. Many of us continue fitting sport into our ever busier working lives and eventually become the ones who want to go on and develop sports clubs ourselves. Indeed, community and amateur sport reflects the circle of life. We participate, we learn, we want to pass on. It is no different with this RBS awards project. Involvement in sport and playing sport teaches you about life, friendship and gives you invaluable lessons for the future. Amateur sports clubs can do many things, among them tackling rising obesity rates in the young and providing disaffected youths with something positive to focus on, and quite often these clubs become beacons in our communities. All of Britain’s Olympians and Paralympians started at grassroots clubs, the lifeblood of all sport in the country.

There was a time when amateur sport was very much a reaction against the growth of industrialism. That amateur ethos which dominated sport through the late 19th and most of the 20th century may have gone, to be replaced by professionalism in most sports. However, amateur sport at a local level still has a higher meaning, often trying to recreate what is seen as a lost ideal and playing a vital role in communities, helping to tackle serious social issues.

With the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London just 18 months away, everywhere we look, and nowhere more so than in our grassroots of sport, there is a readiness to embrace the greatest celebration of multi-sport we may have the chance to witness on our doorstep in our lifetime.

Tell us about your amateur sports club and we will do our best to support you.

• Gareth A Davies has been a sports journalist for The Daily Telegraph since 1993. He covers boxing, mixed martial arts and Paralympic sport for Telegraph Media Group, and is also chairman of the annual Telegraph School Sport Matters awards.

Create a Star October 2010

With thousands of youngsters playing sport each week in local schools and clubs, Haslemere has a wealth of sporting talent that could compete at local, national and international level.

Haslemere’s Create A Star programme will identify budding sports stars who have already shown both promise and commitment. It will help them realise their dreams by giving grants to help meet their training costs. This could include equipment, additional coaching, travel expenses etc.

Create A Star will identify these budding young sportspeople and bring them together with local businesses to forge community partnerships from which both will benefit. Each business will sponsor an individual young sports person who will in return commit to promoting their sponsor through local media, sports clubs, schools etc. The sponsorship will be reviewed annually during which time the recipient will regularly update their sponsor on their training and performance progress.

The business will benefit from the publicity of being associated with a rising star. The recipient benefits from the funding and, through their promotional activities, gains an appreciation of how sports sponsorship works by promoting their own funding source. Further sponsorship will also be accessible through other local and regional funding bodies in Haslemere and Waverley.

Applications for this year from applicant are now closed, but sponsorship is of course always welcome. If you are interested in supporting our local talent, please download the details from here.

Football and Cricket Update February 2010

Football update.
1. The Football Foundation [capital] monies have dried up for the time being whilst they manage the backlog of applications [in other words, they will still talk about football facility development proposals but not fund them at the moment]
2. There is a small grant scheme, however, which will fund up to £20k for worthwhile schemes
3. the excellent 'goalposts replacement' scheme gives funding up to 50 % - anyone can apply
4. The Football Stadium Improvement fund gives generous grants to clubs who aspire to meet the ground grading requirements

Cricket update.
1. The good news is that there is an active Facility Working Group operating at the moment
2. The core function of the group is to identify which projects would be pursued and developed for funding approval
3. The other good news is that cricket actually has some money to give out [ presently, mostly geared towards Focus Clubs]
4. However, in order to take a strategic view, a complete review of all cricket facilities in the county would be necessary [in progress]

David Gill
Sport and Recreation Manager, Waverley Borough Council.

Sport Haslemere AGM

L to R: Alan Healey (Treasurer), Chris Grimes (Chairman), Bob Knowles (TrioPlus), Annie Williams (Committee), Nick Chilton (Retiring President), Jeremy Hunt MP, Trevor Burton (Vice Chairman), Melanie Odell (President), Phil Bates (Committee), Tony Bishop (Committee)

The AGM of Sport Haslemere was held on Monday 8th September at the Georgian House Hotel. Members of the organisation joined with Councillors from Haslemere Town and Waverley Borough Council for the business of the evening. In her report of the past year, Melanie Odell (Retiring Chairman) thanked the members, committee and Councils for their support of another busy year. She also thanked the Georgian House Hotel and The Edge for their generous hospitality for meetings. The Sports Awards had been an exciting feature of the year with many very talented youngsters winning awards and then being put forward to the Surrey Sports Awards.

Jeremy Hunt (MP) talked about the Beijing Olympics which he had been fortunate enough to visit and was looking forward to 2012 when it is hoped that The Edge might be chosen as a Paralympic training centre. Bob Knowles from TrioPlus then gave a short presentation on funding and gave some useful checklists and tips for those wishing to apply for funds.

At the meeting, Nick Chilton retired as President and Melanie Odell was elected. Her position as Chairman has been filled by Chris Grimes. As a fitting retirement gift, Nick was presented for his many years of work with two wine glasses, but more appropriately, the committee donned their sporting gear and offered a rendition of Abba’s Thank You for the Music with the words suitably altered.

To download Bob Knowles' notes, please click here.

YOUNG SPORTS TEAM OF THE YEAR
SPONSORED BY YOUR LOCAL GUARDIAN

Newsquest South London is committed to its coverage of local sporting achievements, so it makes sense for us to have become involved with the Powerade Surrey Sports Awards. Local success stories are a key part of our portfolio of newspapers, which include the Local Guardian series and the Surrey Comet.

The awards we are sponsoring are particularly close to our heart because we like to champion those who may not always get the recognition they deserve. While those who perform great sporting deeds take the headlines, the greatest achievements are never down to a single person. Behind every great athlete or team is a great coach. Someone who cajoles, encourages and inspires. Someone who is there, win or lose. Someone who can say the right things in defeat or come up with the words or strategies to inspire success.

Being involved in a team, and all that that means, is a positive experience for any young person. The best teams aren't only succesful in terms of results. They also instill good values in terms of good sportsmanship and comradeship. Youngsters learn how to cooperate with and get the best out of each other - skills that will be useful to them inside and outside the sporting arena for the rest of their lives.

This award is for the school of junior club team that has:

  • Demonstrated fair play and a good sporting attitude throughout the year;
  • Achieved success or competed at a consistently high level throughout the year; and/or
  • Overcome adversity.

And the winner is:

Guildford City Swimming Club - Speedo Team

The Guildford City Swimming Club Speedo Team is on an extremely successful run. The Surrey County FA is delighted to announce that the Winston Churchhill School in Woking has been awarded the prestigious FA National Charter Standard Schools Award, in the Specialist Sports College category, which recognises the school's exceptional achievements in using football as a means to delivering high quality PE and Sport to young people.

Among a whole host of other projects that the school has been involved in, Winston Churchill has been identified for their terrific contribution to aiding development in Africa. In 2007 12 of the school's most outstanding pupils came through a vigorous selection process to be given the opportunity to go to Kenya, where they delivered coaching and organised football festivals for their Kenyan counterparts.

With the school now pushing over 80 pupils a year through the FA's JFO courses, and with their school sports partnership now encompassing 62 primary schools, Winston Churchill School continues to operate in a league of their own for developing young leaders and organisers. This award is just the latest in a long list of honours that the school has won, recognising its outstanding achievements.

WINNER: Winston Churchill Sports College

RECOGNITION PATHWAYS

In previous years, Surrey sports people have had little opportunity to be recognised in prestigious regional and national awards, as the county has been unable to put forward any clear nominations.

To resolve this issue the winners of the various categories of the Powerade Surrey Sports Awards will be put forward to Sport England as potential nominees for the two high profile televised annual sports awards - the BBC South East Awards and the BBC National Sports Personality of the Year Awards - and to sports coach UK for their national Sports Coach of the Year Awards.

We now hope that Surrey's coaches, volunteers and sports people can go on to gain recognition at a regional and national level for their dedication and hard work.

Grayshott Under 9s win Frensham 6s

On a fantastic summer's day, the Grayshott U9's won their third trophy of the season at the Frensham sixes.

There were 5 teams competing for the U9 trophy. Grayshott came up against a very competitive Finchampstead side in their first match and lost in a close fought encounter.

Grayshott then needed to win the next 3 matches to get through to the final, which we duly did against Cobham (A and B) and Churt. Our performances were steadily improving during the day and everything was set for a final showdown against Finchampstead, who had so far been unbeaten in the competition.

We lost the toss and were put in by the opposition. The bowling was good and straight and we found it hard to score runs quickly. However we stuck to the task and defended well and, pushed along by an excellent partnership by Ed and Harrison of 28 for the last 2 overs, we posted a good score of 38 for 3 in our 6 overs.

We knew that Finchampstead had some big hitters in their team so our bowling needed to be accurate and the fielding tight. We started well taking some early wickets and never let the opposition get close to the total. We held some excellent catches (notably Wes and Ollie) and the ground fielding was superb with three great run outs.

Finchampstead closed at 9 for 7 and the trophy was ours! We had saved our best performance of the day for last and played really well under pressure.

Well done to all nine of the squad on the day - Tom, James Norris, Oscar, Rav, Zach, Ollie, Ed, Wes and Harrison.

A fantastic effort to crown a truly great season!

I'Anson Sixes held at Frensham Sunday 22/07/07

Grayshott won the inaugural I'Anson sixes competition on Sunday at Hollowdene, defeating home team Frensham in the final.

The Shotts featured in four group games against Thursley, Dogmersfield, Chiddingfold and Tilford. In the first two games Andy Wheble had to retire after clearing the boundary on several occasions. In the third game Matt Haywood joined in the fun scoring 25 off just six balls, with all the Grayshott bowlers doing well.

In the final group game against Tilford which was effectively the semi final, Andy Wheble led the line well again as The Shotts finished on 67. In reply, Tilford chased the score down well requiring 28 off the last two overs. Simon Whitley kept his nerve despite Matt Barnes clearing the ropes twice as Matt Haywood ended the run chase with an excellent catch at full tilt. Again the Shotts bowled and fielded well.

In the final against Frensham, both Gary Hunt and Matt Haywood retired off 9 and 8 balls respectively as the Shotts raced to 57 off three overs, but then limped to 68. Frensham though were outdone by some excellent Grayshott bowling with Simon whitley bowling an excellent first over. Frensham put Stuart Balfour to the sword in the second over but surprisingly it was wicket keeper Mole who had just four runs from his over, followed by a maiden from Matt Haywood and a final tight over from Andy Lang saw the Shotts home quite comfortably.

The Shotts put in an excellent all round display including wicket keeper for the day James Tomlinson. Matt Haywood was awarded Player of the Competition.

All the players enjoyed the day which was well organised by Frensham Cricket Club.

Grayshott U9s win the Haslemere 6-a-side tournament

Grayshott U9s won the Haslemere 6-a-side tournament on Sunday 15th July 2007, remaining unbeaten in a round robin event with teams from:

  1. Haslemere A
  2. Haslemere B
  3. Liphook
  4. Hambledon
  5. Valley End.

In their first game against Haslemere ‘A’ the Shotts scored a mighty 152 (the highest score in the tournament) in 6 overs and Haslemere mustered 108 in their allotted overs. The next game was against Hambledon in which Grayshott scored the lowest of the tourmament – 111. (Thankfully David Shepherd was not around!!)

Brilliant bowling and excellent fielding pegged Hambledon (our conquerors of last year) down to 109. A mere 2 runs in it!

The third game was against Liphook who batted first and reached 119. This proved too little as Grayshott reached the target quite easily and ended with a final score of 132. The encounter against Haslemere ‘B’ proved to be yet another close encounter with Grayshott scoring 127 and the hosts falling short by 5 runs in the end.

The last game was against Valley End who too were unbeaten at that stage but we were ahead on runs scored.

Valley End put us into bat first and good knocks from all our batsmen saw us to a score of 142. Good bowling, catching and fielding allowed Valley End a final score of only 126.

An excellent performance from the young men of Grayshott who are pictured here receiving their Cup.

Grayshott Lions Roar
and become Under 9 Two Counties Youth League Champions

It has been 12 years since a Grayshott Youth team tasted League success, but on Sunday their U9 Lions side beat reigning league champions Guildford by three runs in a pulsating final at Churt to win the Alan Staves Cup.

In an excellent game, a credit to both sides, it was Grayshott who held their nerve in the final over with Guildford requiring 6 runs to win. Grayshott’s Keir Robinson bowled a tremendous final over to win the game for Grayshott.

Guildford won the toss and put Grayshott into bat. Good batting combined with some excellent running saw the Shotts make steady progress. Partnerships of 31 (Richard Smart & Raveen Sriharan), 29 (Charlie Sawyer & Wesley Pusey), 25 (James Smith & Harrison Ward) and 22 (Keir Robinson & Calvin Bandi) helped the Shotts on their way.

Guildford bowled and fielded magnificently but all the Grayshott batsmen contributed to a respectable score of 214 for 5

In reply, Guildford got off to good start and kept the scoreboard ticking over. They were well on their way and things were not looking good for the Shotts after 7 overs when the score was 141. However the 8th over from Tom Bussell turned out to be an eventful and crucial one. He grabbed 3 wickets in that over and the Lions could sense something was to happen.

Raveen Sriharan then grabbed a wicket in his first over with the help of a brilliant flying one handed catch by Charlie Sawyer. The Shotts captured another wicket before Tom Bussell returned for his second over in which he took another 2 wickets. An inspired spell of bowling it was. However Guildford proved why they were one of the best teams around. They kept things alive until the last over when they required only 6 runs to walk away with the Alan Staves Trophy for the second year.

The Shotts gathered themselves and prepared for the one final onslaught. They set themselves on the field with lots of thought and in came Keir Robinson for the last over. An exceptional over it was too, backed up by some brilliant work by the fielders. Keir kept his head and bowled an over of good length and line and Guildford were able to get only 2 runs off it leaving the Lions to roar to a well deserved 3 run victory.

Pictured here are the Grayshott Under 9 Lions celebrating with their coaches Sri Sriharan and Rob Ward.

Grayshott 3rd XI crowned champions
of the I`Anson League Division 5

After their victory at Tongham by 8 wickets, the young Grayshott 3rd XI were crowned champions of the I`Anson League Division 5. Gill Rooney and Norman Disney visited Grayshott in the evening to present the winners shield to Lee Conway, standing in for usual skipper Pete Hannam who was away on holiday.

Grayshott amazingly did not draw a game all season – winning 12 games and losing just 3 to finish on 108 points – just pipping Chiddingfold 2nd XI to the title. Most of the side consists of under 15`s bolstered by veterans Alan Lang (41 wickets), Pete Hannam, Alfie Farnfield, Paul Roberts and Lee Conway.

The youngsters who contributed during the season included Tom Part, Billy Maisey, Dan Bolton, Nick Rigden, Matt Jackson, Alex Ward, Danny Brown, Charlie Millsom, Sam Judge, Josh Tytler, George Bowerman and Stuart Young.

Sport Relief funding

Supporting Surrey's Local Communities

May 2007

Sport Relief and Surrey Community Foundation have launched a new funding programme to support local community and voluntary groups. The funding will benefit local communities across Surrey who are using sport to:

  • Increase access to sport and exercise for people who face social exclusion and isolation; or
  • Help people who are experiencing difficulties in their lives to regain their confidence and self-esteem.

Sport Relief was set up by Comic Relief and BBC Sport to use the power and passion of sport to tackle poverty and disadvantage, both in the UK and in some of the world's poorest countries.

The chair of the grants panel, Nick Chilton said,"Funding will focus on supporting community based groups that want to use sport to develop the facilities in their local area. Examples of projects that could be funded include movement to music classes for isolated older people, sporting activities for people with disabilities and sport activities for children with behavioural problems."

Surrey Community Foundation's Chair of trustees, Professor Patrick Dowling said,"We are delighted to be working in partnership with Sport Relief to support our local community groups in Surrey. This is an exciting funding programme that can make a real difference to the quality of life in the area".

If you are interested in applying for a grant from Sport Relief, please contact Surrey Community Foundation to discuss your project and request an application form.
