Tennyson Peal

"Ring out the darkness of the land", "Ring in the Christ that is to be"

These are the inscriptions on the two new bells which were added to the peal in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of Tennyson's birth. The Reverend G H Aitken, then Rector, argued for the bells despite concern from his parishoners for the extra volume, but he explained that the "additional bells will not be too noisy, but more beautiful". The community raised funds for one of the bells and the other was given by Mrs E Collingwood. With the addition of another two trebles in 1927 St Bartholomew's now boasts a peal of ten.

We are indebted to our modern day bell ringers who have offered to ring a quarter peal to celebrate this auspicious occasion, following in the footsteps of their predecessors of 100 years ago.
